For many families, back-to-school season means new clothes, school supplies, schedules, and the excitement of a fresh start.

For Nekia and her daughter Aily, it means something else, too: they’re both going back to school. And they’re both aiming for the honor roll!

Kia (Nekia) is pursuing an Associate degree in Business Management and Supervision, working toward a future that will provide greater financial stability for her family. Her long-term dream is ambitious: to become a Director of Human Resources for a Fortune 500 technology company. HOPE for Single Moms KNOWS she can achieve her Dream job!!

Beside her is Aily, watching her mom work toward that dream while pursuing dreams of her own.

Two Students. Two Big Dreamers. One Family.

Kia and Aily were born in Michigan and spent part of their lives in Texas before returning home. Since coming back to Michigan, both mother and daughter have earned honor roll recognition!

They describe themselves as big dreamers who are determined to succeed. They love spending time with family, trying new adventures, being creative, and volunteering to help others in their community.

This school year, they’re looking forward to making new friends, getting involved in new activities, and earning their way onto the honor roll once again.

But for Kia, going back to school isn’t only about earning a degree. It’s about showing Aily what’s possible!

Every class completed and every step toward her career brings Kia closer to the financial self-sufficiency she wants for her family—and gives Aily a front-row seat to perseverance, education, and the power of pursuing a dream.

Back to School Means Supporting Mom, Too

That’s why HOPE for Single Moms’ Back-to-School campaign looks a little different. We’re not only helping children prepare for school. We’re helping their mothers stay in school, too.

Our four College & Trades moms need textbooks and transportation to continue their education. Their children need clothing and back-to-school essentials. And their families need groceries in the pantry so moms can focus on classes, work, and parenting without having to choose between competing necessities.

Throughout August, our goal is to raise $3,200 to meet the back-to-school needs of our four College & Trades families.

Your gift can help provide:

  • Digital textbooks for our student moms
  • Gas and transportation assistance
  • Back-to-school clothing for their children
  • Pantry essentials for their families
  • Gift cards to Target, Meijer, and Once Upon a Child

Help Our Families Start Strong

When you help Kia continue her education, you’re investing in more than one degree.

You’re helping a mother build a career. You’re helping a daughter begin another school year confidently. And you’re helping create a future in which both of their dreams have room to grow.

That’s what it means to empower a mother and enrich a family.

Help Kia, Aily, and our other HOPE families start the school year prepared, confident, and ready for opportunity.
